Ammonia water 25%
Apart from urea water solutions, ammonia can be used as the reduction agent for NOx emissions control technology, such as SCR or SNCR. For practical reasons, such as restrictions on transport, handling, storage and registration, ammonia in the form of an anhydrous product is not commonly used in standard NOx reduction installations. Instead, 25% water solution of ammonia (ammonia water) is used as the reduction agent.
What is ammonia water?
Ammonia water is a colourless-to-yellow caustic liquid from a strong alkaline reaction with a penetrative, irritant odour, sometimes slightly contaminated by the presence of impurities. Ammonia water is a caustic and dangerous substance for the environment according to the Chemical Substances Act.
Production of ammonia water
Ammonia is produced in large quantities by synthesis of hydrogen and nitrogen at high pressure and temperature. The resulting anhydrous ammonia gas is readily absorbed in water to make ammonia liquor (ammonia water). A standard concentration of 25% of ammonia in water is most often used as the reduction agent for applications in NOx emissions control installations.
Specification and quality of ammonia water
Standard specifications and quality requirements for ammonia water application in SNCR NOx emissions control technology define the parameters for ammonia concentration and evaporation residue.
GreenChem supplies ammonia water with a guaranteed ammonia content of 24.0-25.0% by weight and a maximum evaporation residue of 0.3 g/litre.
Storage and transport of ammonia water
Ammonia water is delivered in tanks, wagons or road-tanks. The tanks are made of unalloyed steel and sealed by a suitable filling material. Regulations for common carriers are valid for transport by means of public transport. Ammonia water is classified for transport purposes as a substance of class 8, UN 2672, classification code C5, safety sign 8, identification emergency number 80, package group III, tank code L4BN.
Ammonia water is to be stored in a cool (recommended storage temperature up to max. 25°C) in original packaging or closed bins intended for this purpose.
Objects in which ammonia water is stored or handled must be equipped in such a way as to avoid a leakage of stored materials into surface and ground waters.
